West Francia

West Francia was the western kingdom created by the 843 Treaty of Verdun, ruled by the Carolingians and regarded as a precursor to the Kingdom of France.

Treaty of Verdun: The 843 agreement that divided the Carolingian Empire among the sons of Louis the Pious. It established West Francia as the western share of the empire.
Charles the Bald: A Carolingian ruler who became king of West Francia in 843 and emperor in 875. He received the western kingdom and consolidated its royal authority.
