Western Chalukya Empire

A South Indian empire ruled by the Western Chalukya dynasty from Kalyani, chiefly between the tenth and twelfth centuries. It shaped Deccan politics and temple architecture.

Tailapa II: A Western Chalukya ruler who founded the dynasty’s imperial power in the late tenth century. His revolt against the Rashtrakutas established the empire.
Vikramaditya VI: A Western Chalukya king whose long reign from 1076 to 1126 marked the dynasty’s height. His rule strengthened royal authority and expanded Chalukya influence.
Kannada literature: Literature composed in Kannada, a major Dravidian language of southern India. Courtly patronage and the empire’s Kannada-speaking regions supported literary production.

Rashtrakuta Empire: A Deccan empire that dominated much of peninsular India from the eighth to tenth centuries. The Western Chalukyas rose as Rashtrakuta power collapsed.
Chalukya–Chola wars: A series of conflicts between the Western Chalukyas and the Chola Empire over the southern Deccan. Repeated wars with the Cholas shaped the empire’s military and political priorities.
Vikramankadeva Charita: A Sanskrit court poem by Bilhana celebrating the reign of Vikramaditya VI. It offers a royal literary account of the empire at its height.
Lakkundi: A historic town in Karnataka with temples and stepwells built under Western Chalukya and later rulers. Its surviving monuments show the dynasty’s architectural patronage.
Jagadhekamalla II: A Western Chalukya king who ruled during the dynasty’s declining period in the mid-twelfth century. His reign preceded the loss of Kalyani to the Kalachuris.
