Western Christianity

Western Christianity comprises Christian traditions that developed chiefly in western Europe, especially Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Its history includes distinctive institutions, theological debates, and liturgical practices.

Roman Catholic Church: The largest Catholic church, led by the pope and rooted in communion with the bishop of Rome. It is Western Christianity’s largest and oldest continuous institutional tradition.
Early Christianity: The diverse Christian movement from its first-century beginnings through its transformation under the Roman Empire. Western traditions developed from this early, geographically diverse movement.
Papacy: The office and authority of the pope as bishop of Rome and head of the Roman Catholic Church. Papal authority became a defining institutional feature of Western Catholicism.
Eastern Orthodoxy: A communion of self-governing churches that share Byzantine Christian theology, liturgy, and sacramental life. It contrasts with Western Christianity in historical development, governance, and liturgical tradition.
Investiture Controversy: An eleventh- and twelfth-century conflict over whether secular rulers or church authorities could appoint bishops. It exposed and reshaped the struggle between papal and royal authority in medieval Europe.
Protestantism: A family of Christian traditions originating in the sixteenth-century Reformation, distinct from Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Its emergence reshaped Western Christianity and produced many distinct churches.
Edict of Milan: A 313 agreement associated with Constantine and Licinius that ended official persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. Legal toleration enabled Christian institutions to expand across the western empire.
Canon law: The body of laws and regulations made or adopted by Christian ecclesiastical authority. It provides the legal framework for governance in Western church institutions.
Anglicanism: A Christian tradition originating in the English Reformation, with churches retaining episcopal structures and varied theological emphases. Its combination of Protestant origins and historic episcopacy complicates simple Catholic-Protestant divisions.
Thirty Years' War: A series of European conflicts from 1618 to 1648, fought largely within the Holy Roman Empire and involving religious and political aims. It demonstrates the political consequences of divisions among Western Christian confessions.
