Western concert flute

A transverse flute, usually made of metal and pitched in C, played by directing air across an embouchure hole. Its keys and cylindrical bore support a wide range used in classical and other music.

Flute embouchure: The shaping of the lips and air stream used to produce sound on a flute. The player’s air jet crosses the embouchure hole to start the instrument’s oscillation.
Transverse flute: A flute held horizontally and sounded by directing an air stream across an opening. The Western concert flute is the best-known member of this instrument family.

Flute concerto: A composition for solo flute accompanied by an orchestra or ensemble. Concertos showcase the instrument’s virtuosity and expressive range.
Flute headjoint: The upper section of a flute containing the embouchure hole and crown. Its geometry strongly affects response, tone, and tuning.
Standing wave: A stable pattern of vibration formed by waves traveling in opposite directions through a medium. Standing waves in the flute’s air column correspond to its playable pitches.
