Western Desert campaign

The Second World War campaign fought by Allied and Axis forces in Egypt and Libya, from Italy’s 1940 invasion of Egypt through the Axis defeat in Tunisia in 1943.

Operation Battleaxe: A British offensive in June 1941 aimed at relieving the besieged garrison of Tobruk. Its failure exposed the difficulty of breaking Axis defenses with limited coordination and reserves.
Italian invasion of Egypt: Italy’s September 1940 advance from Libya into Egypt, halted after a limited westward penetration. This invasion opened the fighting that became the Western Desert campaign.
Erwin Rommel: German field marshal who commanded Axis forces in North Africa and became known as the Desert Fox. His mobile offensives shaped the Axis campaigns from 1941 until his departure in 1943.
Tunisia campaign: The final North African campaign, ending with the surrender of Axis forces in Tunisia in May 1943. Its outcome completed the westward Allied advance begun in the Western Desert.
Eastern Front (World War II): The vast land war between Germany and the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1945. Its enormous armies and industrial scale contrast with the desert campaign’s smaller forces and supply distances.
Operation Crusader: A British-led offensive in November–December 1941 that relieved Tobruk and pushed Axis forces westward. It reversed Axis gains after the siege and restored Allied control of Cyrenaica.
Italian entry into World War II: Italy’s declaration of war against France and Britain on 10 June 1940. It brought Italian forces in Libya into direct conflict with British forces in Egypt.
Bernard Montgomery: British general who commanded the Eighth Army from August 1942 and led it to victory at El Alamein. He organized the Allied breakthrough that ended the Axis advance into Egypt.
Operation Husky: The Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943, launched from bases in North Africa. The desert campaign’s victory enabled the invasion that carried the war onto European territory.
Battle of the Atlantic: The prolonged naval and submarine struggle over Atlantic shipping during the Second World War. The Atlantic convoy war highlights the maritime supply lines on which desert armies depended.
