Western Desert

The Western Desert is the arid region of Egypt west of the Nile, forming the eastern part of the Sahara. Its landscape includes vast sand seas, rocky plateaus, and scattered oases.

Sahara: The Sahara is the vast subtropical desert spanning much of North Africa. The Western Desert forms the Sahara’s Egyptian portion.
Siwa Oasis: Siwa Oasis is an isolated settlement and agricultural area in Egypt’s western desert near the Libyan border. Its springs, date palms, and Amazigh heritage distinguish the far northwest.
Darb el-Arba'in: Darb el-Arba'in was a historic trans-Saharan caravan route linking Sudan with Egypt. The route connected Kharga Oasis to trade networks south of the desert.
African Humid Period: The African Humid Period was a prehistoric interval when much of North Africa was wetter than today. Its lakes and vegetation left traces in areas now occupied by desert.
Groundwater depletion: Groundwater depletion is the decline of underground water reserves through extraction faster than replenishment. Pumping fossil aquifers raises questions about the future of oasis agriculture.
Libyan Desert: The Libyan Desert is the eastern Sahara region extending across western Egypt and neighboring countries. This name is often used for the Western Desert and adjacent desert lands.
Bahariya Oasis: Bahariya Oasis is a depression and settlement in Egypt’s Western Desert southwest of Cairo. Its springs and archaeological sites make it a major inhabited basin.
Western Desert railway: The Western Desert railway is an Egyptian rail corridor serving settlements and industry west of the Nile. Rail infrastructure links the desert’s inhabited areas with the Nile Valley.
Holocene climate change: Holocene climate change is the shift in climate patterns since the end of the last ice age. Long-term drying helped establish the region’s modern arid conditions.
Fossil water: Fossil water is groundwater stored underground since ancient climatic periods and replenished very slowly or not at all. Much groundwater used in the Western Desert is effectively nonrenewable.
