Western Ganga dynasty

The Western Ganga dynasty ruled parts of southern Karnataka from about the fourth to the eleventh century, with its capital at Talakad. Its rulers patronized Jainism and Hindu traditions.

Talakad: A historic town on the Kaveri River in Karnataka, known as the Western Ganga dynasty’s capital. The dynasty governed from this Kaveri-side capital for much of its history.
Karnataka: A state in southwestern India with a long history of Kannada-speaking kingdoms and cultures. The dynasty’s territory lay chiefly in the southern part of this region.
Durvinita: A sixth-century Western Ganga king remembered for political achievement and literary learning. His reign is associated with the dynasty’s consolidation and cultural reputation.
Gommateshwara statue: A colossal monolithic statue of the Jain figure Bahubali at Shravanabelagola, commissioned around 981. Chamundaraya’s commission is the dynasty’s best-known surviving sculptural achievement.
Rashtrakuta Empire: A Deccan empire that flourished from the eighth to tenth centuries and ruled much of the Indian subcontinent. Rashtrakuta alliances elevated Ganga rulers while limiting their independence.
Kolar: A city and historic region in southeastern Karnataka, associated with early Western Ganga power. Kolar was an early center of the dynasty before its capital shifted to Talakad.
Kannada literature: Literary works composed in the Kannada language across poetry, prose, and other forms. Ganga-era inscriptions and patronage belong to the early history of Kannada writing.
Butuga II: A tenth-century Western Ganga ruler who aided the Rashtrakuta emperor Krishna III. His military alliance brought the Gangas influence and territory during Rashtrakuta campaigns.
Shravanabelagola: A Jain pilgrimage center in Karnataka, famed for its hilltop monuments and inscriptions. Ganga patronage helped establish this site as a major Jain center.
Gangavadi: A historic region in southern Karnataka that formed the core of Western Ganga territory. The kingdom’s territorial identity centered on this region.
