Western Marxism

Western Marxism is a strand of Marxist theory developed mainly in Western Europe that emphasizes philosophy, culture, ideology, and political consciousness over economic determinism.

Marxism: A tradition of social, political, and economic theory centered on class struggle and the critique of capitalism. Western Marxism revises Marxist theory while retaining its critique of capitalist society.
Georg Lukács: A Hungarian Marxist philosopher whose work on class consciousness and reification shaped twentieth-century Marxism. His theory of reification became a foundational account of capitalist experience.
Reification: The process by which social relations appear as fixed properties of things or impersonal systems. Lukács used it to explain how commodity exchange shapes perception and social life.
Economic determinism: The view that economic factors determine social and political outcomes in a direct or overriding way. Western Marxism resists reducing politics and culture to direct effects of the economy.
Critical theory: An approach to social theory that analyzes domination and aims to enable human emancipation. Western Marxist work helped establish critical theory’s critique of modern capitalist society.
Historical materialism: An approach to history that explains social change through material conditions and conflicts among social classes. Western Marxists reinterpret how material conditions shape politics and culture.
Antonio Gramsci: An Italian Marxist theorist known for analyzing cultural hegemony and political leadership. His account of hegemony explains how consent helps sustain class rule.
Cultural hegemony: The leadership of a social group secured partly by making its worldview seem like common sense. Gramsci’s concept explains why rule can endure without relying on force alone.
Orthodox Marxism: A current of Marxism associated with systematic doctrine and emphasis on economic laws and historical development. The contrast highlights Western Marxism’s suspicion of rigid, economistic interpretations.
Cultural studies: An interdisciplinary field examining how culture, power, and social identity shape one another. Gramscian ideas about hegemony informed cultural studies’ analysis of popular culture.
