Western Wei

Western Wei was a Chinese dynasty that ruled part of northern China from 535 to 557. It emerged from the division of Northern Wei and was succeeded by Northern Zhou.

Northern Wei: A dynasty that ruled northern China from 386 to 534, founded by the Xianbei Tuoba clan. Western Wei emerged when Northern Wei split after political upheaval in 534.
Six Armies of the Western Wei: The principal military formations organized under Western Wei’s leading commander, Yuwen Tai. They anchored the regime’s military power and later influenced Northern Zhou institutions.
Northern Zhou: A Chinese dynasty that ruled northern China from 557 to 581, succeeding Western Wei. Yuwen Jue replaced Western Wei’s last emperor and founded Northern Zhou in 557.
Battle of Shayuan: A 537 battle in which Western Wei forces defeated a much larger Eastern Wei army. The victory secured Western Wei’s position against its eastern rival.

Sui dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that reunified China and ruled from 581 to 618. The Sui founder Yang Jian came from a family connected to Western Wei’s elite networks.
Battle of Mangshan: A 543 battle in which Eastern Wei forces defeated Western Wei in a major campaign. The defeat exposed the risks of Western Wei’s military rivalry with the east.
Yuwen Tai: A Xianbei military leader who dominated Western Wei and laid the foundations for Northern Zhou. His military and political authority shaped the dynasty despite its nominal emperors.
Guanlong group: A coalition of northwestern Chinese and Xianbei elites influential in Western Wei and successor states. Its aristocratic networks supported Yuwen Tai’s regime and its military leadership.
