Westward expansion

Westward expansion was the movement of U.S. settlement, territory, and political power across North America, especially during the nineteenth century. It displaced Indigenous peoples and reshaped the nation’s borders, economy, and politics.

Louisiana Purchase: The 1803 U.S. acquisition of a vast territory from France, doubling the nation's area. It opened lands west of the Mississippi to U.S. exploration, settlement, and future claims.
Trail of Tears: The forced removal of Cherokee people to Indian Territory in 1838–1839, during which thousands died. It is a stark consequence of federal removal policies accompanying settler expansion.
Thirteen Colonies: The British colonies along the Atlantic coast that declared independence and formed the United States. The original republic began on the eastern seaboard before extending its borders westward.
Indigenous sovereignty: The inherent authority of Indigenous peoples and nations to govern themselves and their lands. U.S. territorial growth repeatedly challenged Indigenous political authority and land rights.
Indian Removal Act: An 1830 U.S. law authorizing negotiations to relocate Indigenous nations from the southeastern United States. Federal removal cleared land for white settlement while forcing Indigenous communities westward.
Indian Territory: A region west of the Mississippi designated by the United States for Indigenous nations, largely in present-day Oklahoma. Removal policies concentrated displaced peoples there, though later U.S. expansion reduced the territory.
Northwest Ordinance: A 1787 U.S. law establishing a process for governing and admitting states from territory north of the Ohio River. It established an early template for converting western territories into states.
American exceptionalism: The belief that the United States has a distinctive national character or historical mission. It supplied a broader national narrative often used to justify continental expansion.
Manifest Destiny: The nineteenth-century belief that U.S. expansion across North America was justified or inevitable. Its rhetoric framed territorial growth as a national mission.
Bleeding Kansas: A series of violent clashes in Kansas Territory over whether slavery would be permitted, mainly from 1854 to 1859. The struggle over slavery in newly organized western territory intensified sectional conflict.
