Wet wipe

A small disposable sheet of nonwoven fabric or paper premoistened with a cleaning or personal-care solution. It releases the solution during wiping and is discarded after use.

Nonwoven fabric: A sheet material made by bonding or entangling fibers without weaving or knitting them. Most wet wipes use this fiber web as their disposable sheet.
Baby wipe: A premoistened disposable wipe designed for cleaning an infant's skin during diaper changes and other care. It is a widely used personal-care type, typically formulated for frequent contact with sensitive skin.
Capillary action: The movement of liquid through narrow spaces caused by surface forces and adhesion. Capillary spaces between fibers draw in and hold the wipe's liquid.
Fatberg: A mass of congealed fats, oils, and other waste that accumulates in sewer systems. Wipes that resist breaking apart can bind with fats and contribute to sewer blockages.
Toilet paper: A soft, absorbent paper product designed to clean after toilet use and disperse in water. Unlike many wipes, toilet paper is engineered to disintegrate rapidly in sewer systems.
Cellulose: A structural polysaccharide that forms the main component of plant cell walls and many paper fibers. Cellulose fibers provide absorbency and can make wipe sheets biodegradable under suitable conditions.
Disinfecting wipe: A premoistened disposable wipe containing an antimicrobial active ingredient intended to disinfect surfaces. Its active ingredients and required wet contact time distinguish it from ordinary cleaning wipes.
Absorption: The uptake of a substance into the bulk of another material. The sheet stores solution within its fiber network until pressure releases it during wiping.
Sewer system: Infrastructure that collects and transports wastewater to treatment or disposal facilities. Flushed wipes can obstruct pumps and pipes in systems designed mainly for human waste and toilet paper.
Dry wipe: A disposable dry sheet used for wiping, cleaning, or absorbing without preloaded liquid. It requires a separately supplied liquid, unlike a premoistened wet wipe.
