Whampoa Military Academy

Whampoa Military Academy was a military school founded near Guangzhou in 1924 to train officers for China’s Nationalist revolutionary movement. Its graduates and instructors became prominent in the Chinese Civil War and later conflicts.

Sun Yat-sen: Chinese revolutionary and political leader who helped overthrow the Qing dynasty and founded the Republic of China. He championed a new officer corps to strengthen the Nationalist movement.
Chiang Kai-shek: Chinese Nationalist political and military leader who led the Republic of China for much of the twentieth century. He served as the academy’s first commandant and shaped its military discipline.
