Whirlwind I

Whirlwind I was a real-time digital computer developed at MIT from 1947 to 1951. Its high speed and interactive display helped inspire air-defense systems and later interactive computing.

Williams tube: An early cathode-ray-tube memory that stored digital bits as electrostatic charge on the screen. Whirlwind used Williams tubes for its first high-speed electronic memory.
Jay Forrester: An American engineer who led the development of Whirlwind I and later founded system dynamics. Forrester directed the project and guided its shift toward real-time air-defense computing.
SAGE: The U.S. air-defense network that used digital computers to track aircraft and coordinate interception. Whirlwind’s design and personnel helped shape the computers used in this system.

Light pen: A photosensitive pointing device that detects light from a computer display. It let operators interact directly with marks on Whirlwind’s CRT display.
Project Whirlwind: An MIT research program to build a high-speed digital computer for aircraft simulation and control. Whirlwind I was the central machine built by this broader research project.
