White Cliffs of Dover

A stretch of English coastline in Kent, formed chiefly from Cretaceous chalk. Its pale cliffs face the Strait of Dover and have long served as a landmark for sailors crossing the Channel.

Chalk: A soft, porous limestone formed mainly from the microscopic calcium carbonate remains of marine organisms. The cliffs consist chiefly of this pale rock, deposited on an ancient seabed.
Wave-cut platform: A gently sloping rock surface left at the base of a retreating sea cliff. Erosion at the cliff foot can leave this platform exposed at low tide.
Cretaceous chalk formation: The accumulation and lithification of carbonate-rich marine sediment during the Cretaceous Period. This process created the rock that now forms the cliffs.
National Trust: A British conservation charity that protects historic places, landscapes, and areas of countryside. The organization owns and manages parts of the cliffs and their surrounding downland.
There'll Be Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover: A 1941 song by Walter Kent and Nat Burton, popularized during the Second World War. Its image of the cliffs became associated with hope for peace and return.
Cretaceous: A geological period lasting from about 145 to 66 million years ago, when chalk deposits formed across much of Europe. The cliffs’ chalk records marine conditions during this period.
Rockfall: The rapid downward movement of detached rock from a steep slope or cliff. Cracks and weathering loosen chalk blocks that can collapse onto the shore.
Anglo-Paris Basin: A geological basin spanning parts of southern England and northern France, containing thick Mesozoic and Cenozoic strata. The cliffs belong to a broad region shaped by the basin’s sedimentary history.
Dover to Kingsdown Cliffs: A protected stretch of chalk coastline and downland in Kent, including the White Cliffs of Dover. This designated site safeguards habitats and geological features along the coast.
Vera Lynn: An English singer whose wartime performances made her known as the “Forces’ Sweetheart.” Her recording helped make the cliffs a widely recognized symbol in wartime Britain.
