Wildebeest

Wildebeest are large African antelopes of the genus Connochaetes, known for living in herds and undertaking seasonal migrations.

Blue wildebeest: The more numerous wildebeest species, native to eastern and southern Africa. This species forms the vast herds behind the Serengeti-Mara migration.
Great Migration: The annual movement of wildebeest and other herbivores through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is the best-known seasonal movement of wildebeest.
Serengeti National Park: A protected area in Tanzania encompassing a large part of the Serengeti ecosystem. The park protects core habitat used by migrating wildebeest.
African lion: A large social cat native to sub-Saharan Africa. Wildebeest are a major prey source for lions in the Serengeti.
Habitat fragmentation: The division of continuous habitat into smaller, isolated patches. Fences and development can block routes wildebeest need to reach seasonal forage.
Black wildebeest: A wildebeest species native to southern Africa, distinguished by a dark coat and pale tail. It is the other living member of the genus Connochaetes.
Serengeti: A savanna ecosystem in northern Tanzania and southwestern Kenya. Its seasonal rains and grass growth shape the migration route.
Mara River: A river flowing through Kenya and Tanzania, crossing the Serengeti-Mara migration route. Seasonal crossings expose migrating wildebeest to currents and crocodiles.
Nile crocodile: A large crocodilian native to freshwater habitats across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It ambushes wildebeest at river crossings, especially along the Mara.
Climate change in Africa: Long-term shifts in African temperatures, rainfall, and climate extremes caused partly by human activity. Changing rainfall patterns may alter the timing and destinations of migrations.
