Wilhelm Ostwald

Wilhelm Ostwald (1853–1932) was a German chemist and philosopher whose research shaped physical chemistry, especially catalysis, chemical equilibria, and reaction rates. He received the 1909 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Physical chemistry: The study of how physical principles govern chemical systems and reactions. Ostwald helped establish this field through quantitative studies of equilibria, rates, and catalysis.
Ostwald process: An industrial process that converts ammonia into nitric acid through catalytic oxidation. It applies catalytic chemistry to a process Ostwald developed for manufacturing nitric acid.
