Wilhelm Wien

Wilhelm Wien (1864–1928) was a German physicist whose work on thermal radiation led to Wien’s displacement law and the 1911 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Wien's displacement law: A law stating that a blackbody’s peak emission wavelength is inversely proportional to its absolute temperature. This is Wien’s best-known result and the basis of his 1911 Nobel Prize.
Blackbody radiation: Electromagnetic radiation emitted by an idealized object that absorbs all incident radiation. Wien’s laws describe how this radiation varies with wavelength and temperature.
University of Göttingen: A German research university founded in 1737 in Göttingen, Lower Saxony. Wien studied at Göttingen before completing his doctorate in Berlin.
Max Planck: A German physicist who introduced energy quantization while deriving the law of blackbody radiation. Planck’s formula succeeded where Wien’s radiation formula failed at longer wavelengths.
Stefan–Boltzmann law: A law stating that a blackbody’s total emitted power per unit area is proportional to its temperature to the fourth power. It complements Wien’s law by relating temperature to total emitted radiation rather than peak wavelength.
Planck's law: A formula describing the spectral distribution of radiation emitted by a blackbody at a given temperature. It replaced Wien’s incomplete spectrum formula with a law valid across all wavelengths.
Wien approximation: A short-wavelength approximation to the spectral distribution of blackbody radiation. Wien proposed this formula before Planck derived a distribution valid across the full spectrum.
Hermann von Helmholtz: A German scientist known for work in physics, physiology, and the conservation of energy. Wien studied under Helmholtz, whose Berlin institute shaped his early research.
Ludwig Boltzmann: An Austrian physicist whose statistical mechanics connected microscopic particles with macroscopic thermodynamics. Boltzmann’s statistical approach influenced the theoretical foundations of Wien’s radiation work.
Rayleigh–Jeans law: A classical formula approximating blackbody radiation at long wavelengths but failing at short wavelengths. Its disagreement with observation at short wavelengths exposed the limits of classical radiation theory.
