William Billings

William Billings (1746–1800) was an American composer and singing-school teacher whose hymns and anthems helped shape early United States choral music.

New England singing schools: Community classes that taught people to read music and sing in parts, especially in colonial and early national New England. These schools trained singers and provided the setting where Billings taught and composed.
Chester (hymn): A hymn tune by William Billings, later associated with the American Revolution through its patriotic text and use. This tune became Billings’s best-known expression of revolutionary-era patriotism.
