William III of the Netherlands

William III was king of the Netherlands and grand duke of Luxembourg from 1849 until his death in 1890. His reign encompassed constitutional reform, colonial expansion, and the end of the personal union between the Dutch and Luxembourg crowns.

William II of the Netherlands: King of the Netherlands from 1840 to 1849 and William III’s father. His death in 1849 brought William III to the throne.
Parliamentary monarchy: A monarchy in which government depends on parliamentary confidence and political authority is constrained by constitutional rules. The 1848 settlement placed Dutch ministers, rather than the king alone, at the center of government.
