William Le Baron Jenney

William Le Baron Jenney (1832–1907) was an American architect and engineer whose metal-frame buildings helped establish the skyscraper as a practical building type.

Steel-frame construction: A building system in which a skeleton of steel columns and beams carries structural loads. Jenney’s metal skeleton anticipated the steel framing that made much taller buildings possible.
Home Insurance Building: A Chicago office building completed in 1885 and designed by William Le Baron Jenney. Its metal frame made it a landmark in the development of tall office construction.
Louis Sullivan: An American architect known for influential Chicago commercial buildings and the phrase “form follows function.” Sullivan worked in Jenney’s office before becoming a leading architect of the Chicago School.
École Centrale Paris: A French engineering school founded in Paris in 1829. Jenney studied there, gaining engineering training that informed his architectural practice.

Ludington Building: A Chicago commercial building designed by Jenney and completed in 1891. Its steel-frame structure and terra-cotta cladding show Jenney’s mature approach to fire-resistant construction.
