William Rowan Hamilton

William Rowan Hamilton was an Irish mathematician and physicist who developed quaternions and reformulated classical mechanics through mathematical principles.

Quaternion: A four-dimensional number system with one real and three imaginary components, used to represent rotations and other transformations. Hamilton introduced quaternions as a new algebra extending complex numbers.
Hamilton–Jacobi equation: A first-order nonlinear partial differential equation whose solutions encode the trajectories of a classical mechanical system. Hamilton developed this equation as a powerful reformulation of classical dynamics.
Trinity College Dublin: A university in Dublin founded in 1592 and Ireland’s oldest university. Hamilton studied and later held the Andrews Professorship of Astronomy there.
Hamiltonian operator: The operator corresponding to total energy in quantum mechanics, governing the time evolution of a quantum state. Quantum theory carries Hamilton’s energy-centered formalism into the dynamics of states.
John Venn: An English logician and mathematician known for developing diagrams that represent relations among sets. Venn later held the Cambridge position once occupied by Hamilton as Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College Dublin.
