William Stoughton

William Stoughton (1631–1701) was a Massachusetts magistrate and colonial governor who presided over the Salem witchcraft trials in 1692.

Samuel Parris: Samuel Parris was the Puritan minister of Salem Village whose household was central to the witchcraft accusations. The first accusations emerged among members of Parris’s household and congregation.
Court of Oyer and Terminer: The special Massachusetts court established in 1692 to hear and decide witchcraft cases during the Salem crisis. Stoughton presided over this court as it tried the accused.
