Lord Kelvin

William Thomson (1824–1907), later known as Lord Kelvin, was a British mathematical physicist whose work shaped thermodynamics, telegraphy, and electrical engineering. The kelvin temperature scale bears his name.

Thermodynamics: The study of heat, work, temperature, and energy and their physical relationships. Its laws supplied the framework for Kelvin’s theories of heat and energy.
Kelvin scale: An absolute temperature scale whose unit is the kelvin and whose zero is absolute zero. Thomson proposed the absolute scale that later took his title as its name.
Transatlantic telegraph cable: An undersea telegraph link connecting Europe and North America across the Atlantic Ocean. Kelvin’s electrical analysis and instruments helped make reliable signaling through the cable possible.
James Prescott Joule: An English physicist whose experiments established the mechanical equivalent of heat. Joule’s experiments on heat and work became central to Kelvin’s thermodynamic research.
Rudolf Clausius: A German physicist who formulated the second law of thermodynamics and introduced the concept of entropy. Clausius developed a distinct formulation of thermodynamics alongside Kelvin’s influential account.
Absolute zero: The lowest possible thermodynamic temperature, at which a system has minimum thermal energy. Kelvin used this limiting point to define an absolute temperature scale.
Carnot cycle: An ideal reversible cycle that sets the maximum efficiency of a heat engine operating between two temperatures. Kelvin drew on Carnot’s engine analysis to formulate thermodynamic temperature.
Mirror galvanometer: A sensitive electrical instrument that detects small currents by reflecting a light beam from a moving mirror. Kelvin designed a highly sensitive version for receiving weak telegraph signals.
George Gabriel Stokes: An Irish mathematician and physicist known for work in fluid mechanics, optics, and mathematical physics. Stokes was a close scientific contemporary and fellow leader in British mathematical physics.
James Clerk Maxwell: A Scottish physicist whose equations unified classical electricity, magnetism, and optics. Maxwell’s field theory differed from Kelvin’s mechanical models of electromagnetic phenomena.
