William Tolbert

William R. Tolbert Jr. was Liberia’s president from 1971 until his overthrow and death in the 1980 coup. He was also a Baptist minister and a leading figure in Liberia’s True Whig Party.

1980 Liberian coup d'état: A military coup that overthrew Liberia’s government on April 12, 1980, and ended the True Whig Party’s rule. Soldiers led by Samuel Doe seized power and killed Tolbert, ending his presidency.
William Tubman: Liberian president who governed from 1944 until his death in 1971, promoting foreign investment and extending political participation. Tolbert succeeded Tubman as president after serving as his vice president.
