William Vickrey

William Vickrey (1914–1996) was a Canadian-American economist whose work on auctions, congestion pricing, and taxation earned him the 1996 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

James Mirrlees: A Scottish economist who shared the 1996 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for work on asymmetric information and taxation. Mirrlees shared Vickrey’s Nobel recognition for analyzing how taxes shape incentives.
Vickrey auction: A sealed-bid auction in which the highest bidder wins but pays the second-highest bid. This auction gives bidders an incentive to state their true valuations.
Congestion pricing: A system that charges road users for travel in congested places or at congested times. Vickrey proposed charging drivers for the delays their trips impose on others.
Auction theory: The economic study of auction formats, bidding behavior, and the allocation of goods through competitive offers. His analysis of bidding incentives became a foundation of modern auction theory.
First-price sealed-bid auction: A sealed-bid auction in which the highest bidder wins and pays their own bid. Unlike Vickrey’s format, this auction rewards bidders for shading offers below their valuations.
Lloyd Shapley: An American mathematician and economist known for game theory and the theory of stable matching. Shapley shared Vickrey’s 1996 Nobel Prize for contributions to incentive design.
