Williamson ether synthesis

A nucleophilic substitution reaction that forms an ether by coupling an alkoxide with an organic halide, typically through an S_N2 mechanism.

S_N2 reaction: A bimolecular nucleophilic substitution in which bond formation and bond breaking occur in one concerted step. The alkoxide forms the ether by displacing the halide in this concerted mechanism.
Ether: An organic compound in which one oxygen atom is bonded to two carbon-containing groups. The synthesis joins two carbon groups through the oxygen atom.
Anisole: The aromatic ether methoxybenzene, with a methyl group bonded to the oxygen of a benzene ring. It can be prepared by coupling phenoxide with a methyl halide.
Ullmann condensation: A copper-mediated coupling used to form carbon–oxygen or carbon–nitrogen bonds, including aryl ethers. It can form aryl ethers where direct substitution on an aromatic halide is unsuitable for Williamson synthesis.
Alkoxide: A negatively charged oxygen species with the general formula R–O⁻. It acts as the nucleophile that supplies the ether oxygen.
Organic halide: An organic compound containing a carbon–halogen bond. It provides the carbon center that receives the alkoxide’s oxygen.
Crown ether: A cyclic polyether whose oxygen atoms bind metal cations within a molecular cavity. Williamson ring closures provide a route to these oxygen-rich macrocycles.
Mitsunobu reaction: A reaction that couples an alcohol with an acidic nucleophile using phosphine and azodicarboxylate reagents. It forms ethers from alcohols without first converting the electrophilic partner into an alkyl halide.
Leaving group: An atom or group that departs with a bonding electron pair during a chemical reaction. The organic halide’s leaving group departs as the new carbon–oxygen bond forms.
Alcohol: An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Deprotonating an alcohol commonly produces the alkoxide coupling partner.
