Willis H. O'Brien

Willis H. O'Brien was an American stop-motion animator and special-effects artist whose landmark work brought dinosaurs in The Lost World and King Kong to life.

Stop-motion animation: Animation made by photographing objects in successive poses and showing the images in sequence. O’Brien animated miniature creatures by changing their poses between exposures.
Rear projection: A filming technique that projects a background image behind actors or objects in the foreground. Projected live-action footage could appear behind O’Brien’s animated models.
Ray Harryhausen: An American stop-motion animator who developed creature effects for films including Jason and the Argonauts. Harryhausen learned from O’Brien and became his most influential successor.
King Kong: A fictional giant ape who became the central figure of a film franchise beginning in 1933. O’Brien’s animated performance shaped Kong’s enduring screen identity.
