Wiman Joseon

Wiman Joseon was the late phase of Old Joseon, ruled by Wiman and his successors from the late second century BCE until Han conquest in 108 BCE.

Wiman: Wiman was a migrant from Yan who took power in Old Joseon and founded its ruling dynasty. His rise marks the beginning of Wiman Joseon.
Han–Xiongnu War: The Han–Xiongnu War was a prolonged conflict between the Han empire and the Xiongnu confederation. Han’s campaigns against the Xiongnu formed the wider strategic setting for its move against Wiman Joseon.
King Jun of Gojoseon: King Jun was the last ruler of the earlier Old Joseon line displaced by Wiman, according to Chinese accounts. His displacement is the traditional starting point of Wiman’s dynasty.
Han dynasty: The Han dynasty ruled China from 202 BCE to 220 CE and expanded its influence across East Asia. Han power made the conquest of Wiman Joseon possible.
Old Joseon: Old Joseon was an ancient Korean polity known from Chinese historical records and later Korean tradition. Wiman Joseon was the final phase of this earlier polity.
Emperor Wu of Han: Emperor Wu ruled the Han dynasty from 141 to 87 BCE and expanded its territory through military campaigns. He ordered the campaigns that ended Wiman Joseon.
Wi Man (Han official): Wi Man was a Han official associated with the surrender of the Wiman Joseon capital during the Han invasion. His name resembles Wiman’s, but he was a later figure connected with the kingdom’s defeat.
Korean history: Korean history is the recorded and archaeological history of the Korean Peninsula and its peoples. Wiman Joseon is an early polity in the peninsula’s history.
Yan (state): Yan was a Zhou-era Chinese state in northeastern China, bordering regions associated with early Korean polities. Wiman was associated with Yan before establishing his rule in Old Joseon.
Wiman Joseon–Han War: The Wiman Joseon–Han War was the Han campaign that culminated in the conquest of Wiman Joseon in 108 BCE. This war directly ended the dynasty’s rule.
