Wind engineering

Wind engineering studies how wind loads and wind-induced motion affect structures, and applies that knowledge to design buildings, bridges, and other structures for safety and serviceability.

Wind load: The force exerted by wind on a structure or its components. It is the direct design quantity that wind engineering estimates and resists.
Wind tunnel: A facility that produces controlled airflow for studying aerodynamic forces and flow patterns. Boundary-layer wind tunnels test building pressures and structural responses at model scale.
Wind climatology: The statistical description of wind conditions across locations and time. Local wind records establish the speeds and directions used in structural design.
Aerodynamic shaping: The design of a body's shape to control airflow and aerodynamic forces. Changing building or bridge geometry can reduce excitation before structural systems are added.
Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse: The 1940 collapse of a suspension bridge in Washington state after wind-driven oscillation. The disaster made aerodynamic instability a defining concern in bridge design.
Boundary layer: A region of fluid flow near a surface where viscosity strongly affects velocity. The atmospheric boundary layer determines the wind profile approaching a structure.
Computational fluid dynamics: Numerical methods for simulating fluid flow and its interaction with surfaces. CFD predicts wind flow around complex structures and urban forms.
Extreme value theory: Statistical methods for modeling rare events in the tails of probability distributions. It helps estimate design wind speeds associated with long return periods.
Tuned mass damper: A secondary mass tuned to reduce vibration in a primary structure. It mitigates wind-induced motion rather than changing the wind load itself.
Millennium Bridge (London): A pedestrian suspension bridge across the River Thames that opened in 2000. Its lateral motion and retrofit illustrate how dynamic response can matter beyond strength.
