Wind erosion

Wind erosion is the detachment, transport, and deposition of soil or rock particles by moving air. It reshapes exposed surfaces through particle removal and impact.

Deflation: The removal of loose particles from a surface by wind. Lifting and sweeping away loose sediment is wind erosion’s direct removal process.
Aeolian processes: Geological processes involving the action of wind on Earth's surface. Wind erosion is one part of the broader set of wind-driven processes.
Wind erosion equation: A model used to estimate long-term soil loss from wind erosion on agricultural land. It translates climate, soil, field length, and cover conditions into an erosion estimate.
Ventifact: A rock shaped or polished by abrasion from windblown particles. Its facets and surface textures record persistent sandblasting.
Abrasion: The wearing of a surface by particles driven against it. Windblown grains grind exposed rock and help carve desert landforms.
Soil texture: The proportions of sand, silt, and clay in soil. Particle size strongly affects how readily wind can detach and carry soil.
Dust storm: A strong wind event that lifts large amounts of dust and sand into the air. Dust storms reveal wind erosion at a regional scale and create health and transport hazards.
Yardang: An elongated ridge carved into bedrock or sediment by wind erosion. Yardangs show how abrasion and deflation sculpt exposed terrain.
Saltation: The movement of sediment in short, repeated hops near a surface. Hopping grains strike the ground and help launch other particles.
Soil crust: A thin, hardened layer at the surface of soil. Crusts bind particles and can reduce their susceptibility to wind.
