Windbreak

A windbreak is a row or barrier of trees or shrubs that reduces wind speed. It protects soil, crops, livestock, buildings, or people on its sheltered side.

Wind profile: A description of how wind speed and direction vary with height above a surface. Windbreaks alter the near-surface wind profile on both their windward and sheltered sides.
Agroforestry: Land-use systems that deliberately integrate trees with crops or livestock. Windbreaks are a familiar agroforestry practice on farms and ranches.
Shelterbelt: A planted belt of trees and shrubs designed to shelter land from wind. Shelterbelt commonly names a larger, multirow agricultural windbreak.
Evapotranspiration: The combined transfer of water to the atmosphere through evaporation and plant transpiration. Reduced wind can lower evaporative demand, while windbreak trees also consume water.
Great Plains Shelterbelt: A large federal tree-planting program launched in the United States during the 1930s to reduce wind erosion. It is a landmark example of windbreak planting at regional scale during the Dust Bowl.
Shelterbelt effect: The reduction and redistribution of wind behind a planted barrier. This names the sheltered airflow pattern created by a windbreak.
Soil erosion: The detachment and transport of soil by agents such as wind and water. Reducing wind speed helps limit the removal of exposed topsoil.
Hedgerow: A line of shrubs or trees, often planted as a boundary between fields. A dense hedgerow can function as a windbreak while also marking property or field edges.
Microclimate: The climate conditions within a small area that differ from those of its surroundings. Shelter changes temperature, humidity, and wind in the space beside a windbreak.
Sahelian windbreaks: Planted barriers used in the Sahel to reduce wind exposure and protect agricultural land. These systems adapt windbreak practice to dryland conditions and scarce water.
