Windows XP

Windows XP is a Microsoft operating system for personal computers, released in 2001. It combined the Windows 2000 codebase with a consumer-oriented interface and was succeeded by Windows Vista.

Windows NT: Windows NT is a family of Microsoft operating systems built around a portable, multitasking kernel and protected memory. XP brought this NT architecture to Microsoft's consumer Windows line.
Windows 2000: Windows 2000 is a Microsoft NT-based operating system released in 2000 for business and professional use. Its codebase supplied XP's technical foundation.
Windows XP Home Edition: Windows XP Home Edition is the consumer edition designed primarily for home personal computers. It brought XP's NT-based platform to household PCs.
Windows 98: Windows 98 is a consumer operating system from Microsoft's Windows 9x line, released in 1998. It represents the older consumer branch XP displaced.
Windows XP architecture: Windows XP's architecture combines the NT kernel, system services, drivers, and user-mode applications. Its kernel and compatibility layers underpin XP's desktop behavior.
Windows Me: Windows Me is a consumer operating system released in 2000, built on Microsoft's Windows 9x line. XP replaced this consumer branch with an NT-based system.
Windows XP Professional: Windows XP Professional is the business-oriented edition with features such as domain joining and remote desktop hosting. Organizations used it for managed desktops and networked workstations.
Windows Vista: Windows Vista is Microsoft's operating system released in 2007 as the successor to Windows XP. Vista replaced XP with a redesigned interface and stricter security controls.
Windows XP user interface: The visual and interaction design of Windows XP, including the Luna theme, Start menu, and taskbar. Luna and the revised Start menu gave XP its recognizable desktop.
Windows Neptune: Windows Neptune was an unreleased Microsoft project intended to bring NT technology to home users. Its planned consumer NT direction anticipated XP's eventual role.
