Wing loading

Wing loading is an animal’s mass divided by the area of its wings. It relates body weight to the wing area available to generate aerodynamic forces.

Lift (force): The aerodynamic force perpendicular to airflow that supports an aircraft or flying animal. Wings must generate enough lift to support the mass represented in wing loading.
Bird migration: The regular seasonal movement of birds between breeding and nonbreeding regions. Wing loading can affect flight speed and the energetic demands of long-distance travel.
Wing area: The planform area enclosed by a wing’s outline when viewed from above. Wing area is the denominator in the animal measure of wing loading.
Wing area loading: The ratio of wing area to body mass, the reciprocal of mass per unit wing area. This reversed ratio expresses the same relationship with larger values indicating more area per mass.
Stall speed: The minimum speed at which a wing can produce enough lift to sustain controlled flight. Higher wing loading generally requires greater speed before lift can support flight.
Albatross: A large seabird with long, narrow wings adapted for efficient soaring over the ocean. Its low wing loading supports sustained flight at relatively low speeds.
Body mass: The quantity of matter in an organism, commonly measured in kilograms or grams. Body mass is the numerator in wing loading as defined for animals.
Wing cube loading: A flight metric based on an animal’s mass divided by the cube of its wing span. It includes span and mass differently, offering another way to compare flight capability.
Aspect ratio (aeronautics): The ratio of a wing’s span to its mean chord, describing how long and narrow it is. Aspect ratio influences aerodynamic efficiency alongside the area captured by wing loading.
Hummingbird: A small New World bird capable of hovering through rapid, powered wingbeats. Its small wings and high mass relative to wing area contrast with broad-winged soarers.
