Winter storm

A storm in cold weather that produces snow, freezing rain, sleet, or strong winds and creates hazardous winter conditions.

Snow: Precipitation made of ice crystals that form in clouds and fall as flakes or aggregates. Snowfall is the defining hazard in many winter storms.
Atmospheric front: A boundary separating air masses with different temperatures, humidity, or density. Frontal boundaries help organize precipitation and sharp temperature changes in winter storms.
Numerical weather prediction: Forecasting atmospheric conditions by numerically solving equations that describe the atmosphere. Models estimate a storm's track, intensity, and precipitation distribution.
Hypothermia: A dangerous drop in core body temperature caused when heat loss exceeds heat production. Cold exposure during storms can become life-threatening, especially without shelter or dry clothing.
Freezing rain: Rain that freezes on contact with surfaces at or below freezing, forming a coating of ice. A warm layer above shallow surface cold can turn winter precipitation into dangerous glaze.
Cyclone: A large-scale atmospheric circulation rotating around a center of low pressure. Many widespread winter storms develop around a surface low-pressure system.
Winter weather advisory: An official alert for winter conditions expected to cause inconvenience or hazards but generally below warning criteria. Advisories communicate impacts that may disrupt travel without meeting more severe thresholds.
Frostbite: Freezing injury to skin and underlying tissue, most often affecting exposed extremities. Wind and prolonged exposure make tissue injury a direct storm-related risk.
Sleet: Small ice pellets formed when raindrops or melted snow refreeze before reaching the ground. Its formation depends on a colder atmospheric layer below melting air.
Atmospheric pressure: The force per unit area exerted by the weight and motion of air. Pressure patterns reveal the lows and gradients that drive storm winds.
