Wirtschaftswunder

Wirtschaftswunder, or the West German economic miracle, was the rapid expansion of West Germany’s economy from the late 1940s through the 1950s, marked by rising production, employment, and living standards.

Deutsche Mark: Germany’s currency introduced in 1948, replacing the Reichsmark in the western occupation zones. The currency reform helped end price controls’ distortions and restore monetary stability.
World War II: A global conflict fought from 1939 to 1945 between the Axis powers and the Allies. The war left German cities, transport networks, and industrial sites heavily damaged.
Gastarbeiter: The foreign workers recruited by West Germany from the 1950s onward to address labor shortages. The boom’s demand for workers helped prompt recruitment agreements with other countries.
German Democratic Republic economy: The centrally planned economy of East Germany from 1949 until German reunification in 1990. Its slower growth under a different economic system provides a contemporary German comparison.
Social market economy: An economic order combining market competition with social protections and public regulation. Ludwig Erhard’s market reforms shaped the recovery’s institutional framework.
Allied occupation of Germany: The division and administration of Germany by the victorious Allied powers after 1945. Occupation authorities controlled early economic policy and the conditions for reconstruction.
Expellees and refugees in West Germany: Millions of ethnic Germans who arrived in postwar West Germany after forced displacement from eastern Europe. Their integration into the labor force formed part of the recovery’s social transformation.
Ordoliberalism: A German economic tradition advocating strong legal rules to secure competition and limit concentrated power. It influenced the policy debate, but the social market economy was not simply identical to it.
Ludwig Erhard: A German economist and politician who served as West Germany’s economics minister and chancellor. As economics minister, he drove the 1948 reforms associated with the recovery.
Bizone: The 1947 economic union of the American and British occupation zones in Germany. The Bizone established a western administrative framework before the Federal Republic existed.
