Witch trials

Witch trials were legal proceedings in which people were accused of practicing harmful magic or witchcraft. They occurred in many societies and varied widely in their laws, procedures, and outcomes.

Witchcraft accusation: A claim that someone practiced witchcraft, often alleging harm through supernatural means. Accusations initiated cases and could spread through testimony, rumor, or local conflict.
Salem witch trials: The 1692–1693 witchcraft prosecutions in colonial Massachusetts that led to 20 executions. Salem is the best-known North American case and shows the danger of spectral evidence.
European witch trials: The prosecutions for witchcraft conducted across Europe, especially from the 15th through 18th centuries. This broader history places individual cases within the period of Europe’s largest witch hunts.

Heinrich Kramer: A German Dominican inquisitor and author of the Malleus Maleficarum. His writings helped circulate arguments supporting witch prosecution.
