Władysław I Łokietek

Władysław I Łokietek was king of Poland from 1320 until his death in 1333. He reunited much of the kingdom after its fragmentation into regional duchies.

Piast dynasty: The dynasty that ruled Poland and several neighboring duchies from the tenth century into the seventeenth. Władysław’s claim to Poland rested on his descent from this ruling house.
Greater Poland: A historical region of west-central Poland centered on Poznań and Gniezno. Władysław’s recovery of this region strengthened his base for unification.
Jadwiga of Kalisz: A Polish duchess and wife of Władysław I Łokietek, who served as regent during his absences. Her regency helped sustain the dynasty while Władysław pursued his campaigns.
Kingdom of Poland (1025–1385): The medieval Polish kingdom ruled by the Piast dynasty and, later, the Angevins. Władysław’s reign restored this kingdom after generations of political division.
Bolesław III Wrymouth: A Piast duke of Poland whose 1138 testament divided the realm among his sons. His succession settlement helped create the regional fragmentation Władysław later challenged.
Lesser Poland: A historical region of southern Poland centered on Kraków. Its political center became the seat of Władysław’s restored royal authority.
Casimir III the Great: King of Poland from 1333 to 1370, the son and successor of Władysław I Łokietek. His inheritance shows how Władysław’s restoration passed to the next Piast king.
Polish–Teutonic War (1326–1332): A war between Poland and the Teutonic Order over territories including Kuyavia and Dobrzyń Land. The conflict exposed unresolved borders inherited by Władysław’s successor.
