Knowra Woman Woman A woman is an adult person belonging to the social category of women. The category is commonly associated with female sex, but sex alone does not define it.
Gender : A social and cultural system of identities, roles, and relations associated with sex. Woman is a gender category, though its boundaries and meanings vary across societies.
Man : An adult person belonging to the social category of men. Man is the customary gender-category contrast to woman, though not every gender system is binary.
First-wave feminism : A nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century movement focused largely on women’s legal and political rights. Its campaigns made women’s civic status a central public question.
Women’s health : Healthcare and research concerning conditions, needs, and outcomes affecting women. It addresses health patterns shaped by reproductive biology as well as social conditions.
Gender identity : A person’s internal sense of their gender, which may or may not match sex assigned at birth. For many women, womanhood names a lived gender identity rather than a conclusion drawn from anatomy.
Non-binary gender : Gender identities that are not exclusively male or female. Non-binary identities show that gender categories need not be limited to woman and man.
Women’s suffrage : The movement to secure women’s right to vote. Suffrage campaigns challenged laws that excluded women from political participation.
Reproductive rights : Rights concerning decisions about reproduction, contraception, pregnancy, and abortion. These rights shape women’s autonomy, though not all women can become pregnant and others can.
Womanism : A social and political perspective centered on the experiences and concerns of Black women. It highlights how race and gender shape distinct meanings and experiences of womanhood.
Sex : A set of biological attributes involving anatomy, chromosomes, hormones, and reproductive traits. Sex is associated with womanhood but is not identical to social gender category.
