Wonhyo

Wonhyo (617–686) was a Korean Buddhist monk and philosopher of the Silla kingdom. His writings sought to reconcile divergent Buddhist teachings and make Buddhism accessible beyond the monastic community.

Mahayana: A major Buddhist tradition centered on the bodhisattva path and the liberation of all beings. Wonhyo’s thought developed within this broad tradition and its varied scriptures.
Hwajaeng: Wonhyo’s method of reconciling doctrinal disputes by identifying the partial truths and contexts behind opposing positions. This is the name most directly associated with his integrative approach.
Silla: A Korean kingdom that ruled much of the Korean Peninsula from 57 BCE to 935 CE. Wonhyo lived and taught during Silla’s transformation and consolidation of Buddhist institutions.
Commentary on the Awakening of Faith: Wonhyo’s influential exposition of the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana, a key text in East Asian Buddhism. It is a major surviving example of his attempt to unify apparently divergent doctrines.
Haeinsa: A Korean Buddhist temple founded in the ninth century and now known for preserving the Tripitaka Koreana. Its later prominence illustrates the monastic landscape shaped by Korean Buddhism after Wonhyo.
Yogachara: A Mahayana philosophical tradition that analyzes experience through consciousness and cognition. Its theories of consciousness informed major strands of Korean Buddhist thought Wonhyo engaged.
One Mind: A Mahayana idea of mind as the basis encompassing both unchanging suchness and conditioned phenomena. Wonhyo used this framework to show how differing accounts of reality could belong to one teaching.
Korean Buddhism: The historical development of Buddhist traditions, institutions, and practices on the Korean Peninsula. Wonhyo became one of the most influential thinkers in this regional Buddhist history.
Pure Land Buddhism: Buddhist traditions centered on devotion to Amitabha Buddha and aspiration for rebirth in his Pure Land. Wonhyo helped make Pure Land practice accessible through teachings directed beyond elite monastic circles.
Tripitaka Koreana: A thirteenth-century Korean woodblock edition of the Buddhist canon, preserved at Haeinsa. It represents the later Korean scriptural culture in which Wonhyo’s commentarial legacy was transmitted.
