Wood

Wood is the lignified tissue that supports trees and conducts water and nutrients. Its cell walls consist mainly of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Xylem: Xylem is vascular tissue that transports water and dissolved minerals through plants and provides structural support. Wood is the secondary xylem produced by woody plants.
Cellulose: Cellulose is a structural polysaccharide made of glucose chains and is a major component of plant cell walls. Cellulose microfibrils provide much of wood's tensile strength.
Lumber: Lumber is wood processed into standardized boards or structural pieces for construction and manufacturing. Sawn wood turns tree stems into widely used building material.

Tracheid: A tracheid is an elongated, water-conducting plant cell with a thick, lignified wall. Tracheids conduct water and provide support in most conifers.
Hemicellulose: Hemicellulose is a group of branched polysaccharides in plant cell walls that associate with cellulose. It helps bind cellulose fibers within wood's cell walls.
Plywood: Plywood is an engineered wood panel made by bonding thin veneers with alternating grain directions. Its cross-laminated structure reduces the directional weakness of solid wood.
Sustainable forestry: Sustainable forestry manages forests to maintain their ecological, economic, and social values over time. It aims to supply wood while preserving forest renewal and broader ecosystem functions.
Vessel element: A vessel element is a short, wide xylem cell joined end-to-end with others to form a water-conducting vessel. Vessel elements form the large water conduits characteristic of many flowering trees.
Wood cell: A wood cell is a specialized plant cell that forms part of secondary xylem, often with a thickened wall. Wood's properties emerge from the shapes and walls of its constituent cells.
