Wootz steel

Wootz steel is high-carbon crucible steel historically made in South Asia. Its carbide-rich structure could form distinctive patterns in blades traded as Damascus steel.

Crucible steel: Steel produced by melting iron and carbon together in a sealed crucible. Wootz is a historically distinctive form of steel made by this process.
South Asian metallurgy: Metalworking traditions developed across the Indian subcontinent and neighboring regions. Wootz emerged from South Asian expertise in iron smelting and crucible production.
Damascus blade: A blade made from patterned steel historically associated with Damascus and the Middle East. Such blades are the best-known historical use associated with wootz ingots.
