Word (linguistics)

A word is a linguistic unit that can function as a meaningful element in speech or writing. Its boundaries and grammatical behavior vary across languages and theories.

Morpheme: The smallest linguistic unit that carries meaning or grammatical function. A word may consist of one morpheme or combine several.
Clitic: A grammatical element that behaves like a word in some ways but depends phonologically on a neighboring word. Clitics expose the mismatch between grammatical independence and sound-based word boundaries.
Lexicography: The practice and study of compiling, editing, and analyzing dictionaries. Dictionary makers must decide which forms merit separate entries.
Ancient Greek grammar: The grammatical tradition developed by Greek scholars from antiquity onward. Greek grammatical analysis helped establish influential categories for describing words.
Phoneme: A contrastive sound category that can distinguish words in a language. Spoken words are built from sound patterns organized by phonemes.

Panini: An ancient Indian grammarian whose Sanskrit grammar gives a highly systematic account of linguistic forms. Panini’s analysis shows that formal accounts of word structure have deep, independent histories.
Lexeme: An abstract vocabulary unit that groups a word’s grammatical forms. A single lexeme can appear as several inflected word forms.
Tokenization: The process of dividing a text into units such as words, punctuation marks, or symbols. Computational word counts require explicit decisions about what counts as a boundary.
