Word order

Word order is the arrangement of words in a sentence or phrase. It can signal grammatical roles, express relationships between ideas, and shape emphasis.

Syntactic constituent: A group of words that functions as a unit within a sentence’s grammatical structure. Word order arranges constituents as well as individual words.
Basic word order: The usual sequence of major constituents in a language’s ordinary declarative clauses. It captures recurring sentence patterns such as subject–verb–object.
Free word order: A pattern in which major constituents can appear in multiple orders without changing their basic grammatical relations. It contrasts with systems that rely heavily on a fixed constituent sequence.
Second-language acquisition: The process of learning a language after acquiring a first language. Learners often transfer familiar ordering patterns into a new language.
English syntax: The grammatical structure of English, including how words combine into phrases and sentences. English commonly uses subject–verb–object order in declarative clauses.
Subject (grammar): A grammatical relation commonly associated with the entity a clause is about or the agent of its verb. Its position helps identify subjects in languages with relatively fixed order.
Case marking: The marking of a noun phrase’s grammatical role through its form or associated words. Rich case marking can let languages vary order without obscuring roles.
Scrambling (linguistics): The displacement of constituents from their usual positions, often without changing their basic grammatical roles. It is a specific kind of word-order variation found in some languages.
Translation: The expression of a text’s meaning in another language. Translators often recast word order to preserve meaning and naturalness.
Japanese grammar: The system of Japanese grammatical forms and sentence structure. Japanese commonly places the verb at the end of a clause.
