Knowra World Digital Library World Digital Library The World Digital Library was an online collection of cultural heritage materials from institutions worldwide, launched by the Library of Congress and UNESCO in 2009.
Library of Congress : The national library of the United States and a major research institution in Washington, D.C. It initiated the World Digital Library and hosted its platform.
James H. Billington : An American historian who served as Librarian of Congress from 1987 to 2015. He proposed the World Digital Library in 2005.
Manuscript : A document written by hand rather than produced solely through printing or digital composition. Digitized manuscripts formed a distinctive part of the collection.
Europeana : A European digital platform that provides access to digitized cultural heritage from institutions across Europe. It offers a regional counterpart to the World Digital Library’s international aggregation.
UNESCO : A United Nations agency that promotes international cooperation in education, science, culture, and communication. It co-founded the project and helped recruit cultural institutions worldwide.
World Summit on the Information Society : A United Nations-led series of meetings addressing information and communication technologies and their social effects. Billington presented the project proposal at its 2005 Tunis meeting.
Historical map : A map created in the past that documents geographical knowledge, boundaries, or places of its time. Maps offered visual evidence of changing knowledge and political geography.
Digital Public Library of America : A platform providing online access to digitized collections from libraries, archives, museums, and other U.S. institutions. It similarly brings distributed cultural collections together through a shared discovery platform.
Digital library : An organized collection of digital materials made available through electronic systems. The World Digital Library was a collaborative international example of this broader model.
2009 : The year beginning on Thursday, January 1, in the Gregorian calendar. The World Digital Library opened to the public in April of this year.
