World Games

The World Games are an international multi-sport competition held every four years for sports and disciplines not included in the Olympic Games.

International World Games Association: The international sports organization that governs and organizes the World Games. It coordinates the event with participating international sports federations and host cities.
First World Games: The inaugural edition of the World Games, held in Santa Clara, California, in 1981. Its program established the event as a recurring international competition.
Flying disc: A family of sports played with a flying disc, including ultimate and disc golf. Flying disc sports have used the World Games as an international championship stage.
Sport in the Olympic program: A sport included in the events contested at an edition of the Olympic Games. World Games sports may later gain Olympic status, changing their international platform.
International sports federation: An organization that governs a sport internationally and sets its rules and competitions. Federations propose and administer the sports represented at the World Games.
World Games 1981: The first World Games, staged in Santa Clara, California, in 1981. This edition introduced the format before the event adopted a four-year cycle.
Karate at the World Games: The karate competition contested at selected editions of the World Games. Karate has appeared at the event both before and after its Olympic debut.
Karate at the 2020 Summer Olympics: The karate competition held at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021. Karate’s Olympic debut followed decades of competition in the World Games.
World Games qualification: The procedures that determine which athletes and teams may compete at the World Games. Qualification is organized sport by sport, often through world championships or rankings.
Juan Antonio Samaranch: A Spanish sports administrator who served as president of the International Olympic Committee from 1980 to 2001. His support helped establish cooperation between the World Games and Olympic movement.
