World Meteorological Organization

The World Meteorological Organization is a United Nations specialized agency that coordinates international cooperation on weather, climate, water, and related observations and services.

World Weather Watch: A World Meteorological Organization program coordinating global weather observations, telecommunications, and forecasting systems. It is the WMO framework for collecting and exchanging operational weather data worldwide.
Global Framework for Climate Services: An international framework that helps make climate information useful for decisions across sectors. It links climate data and expertise to services that WMO members can apply.
International Meteorological Organization: A nongovernmental organization founded in 1873 to coordinate meteorological observations and practices among countries. It was the WMO's direct predecessor and established the international cooperation the agency formalized.
Francis Galton: An English polymath whose work included proposing an international weather-charting project in the nineteenth century. His proposal helped catalyze efforts toward organized international meteorological cooperation.

World Meteorological Convention: The 1947 treaty establishing the World Meteorological Organization as an intergovernmental organization. It created the legal basis for replacing the International Meteorological Organization with the WMO.
Cleveland Abbe: An American astronomer and meteorologist who helped develop weather forecasting and international meteorological cooperation. He advocated standardized observations and data exchange that anticipated WMO practices.
