World peace

World peace is a condition in which nations and peoples coexist without war or widespread violence. It is pursued through diplomacy, international law, and cooperation.

Collective security: A system in which states treat threats to one member’s security as a concern for all. It aims to deter aggression by coordinating responses among states.
Concert of Europe: A nineteenth-century system of consultation among European great powers intended to preserve stability. It was an early effort to maintain peace through recurring cooperation among major states.
Negative peace: The absence of direct violence or armed conflict. It captures the narrower sense of peace as fighting that has stopped.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 treaty that formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers after World War I. Its contested settlement illustrates how peace agreements can leave grievances that threaten stability.
Democratic peace theory: The theory that established democracies rarely or never fight wars against one another. It raises the question of whether political institutions make lasting peace more likely.
Peacekeeping: The deployment of international personnel to help maintain or restore peace in conflict areas. Peacekeepers can monitor ceasefires and reduce risks of renewed fighting.
League of Nations: An international organization founded after World War I to promote cooperation and prevent war. Its creation made collective security a central project of modern international order.
Positive peace: A condition marked by social justice, equitable institutions, and the absence of structural violence. It distinguishes peace built on just social conditions from mere absence of war.
Nuremberg trials: The postwar proceedings in which an international tribunal tried leading Nazi officials for major crimes. They linked postwar peace to accountability for aggression and atrocities.
Just war theory: A tradition of ethical reasoning about when war may be justified and how it should be conducted. It tests whether peace requires rejecting war or regulating its permissible use.
