World Wide Web Consortium

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international organization that develops open standards and guidelines for the World Wide Web through collaboration among member organizations, staff, and the public.

W3C Recommendation: A W3C standard that has completed the consortium’s formal review and approval process. This is the formal status many mature W3C specifications seek.
World Wide Web: A system of interlinked resources accessed over the internet using web technologies. The consortium develops standards for this system.
Tim Berners-Lee: A British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web and founded the W3C. He established the consortium to coordinate the Web’s technical development.
Internet Engineering Task Force: An open standards organization that develops internet protocols through working groups and published RFCs. The IETF standardizes many internet protocols, while W3C focuses on web technologies.
W3C Process Document: The rules governing W3C’s membership, groups, decision-making, and specification development. It defines how the consortium develops and approves standards.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol: An application-layer protocol for transferring messages and resources between web clients and servers. HTTP is among the core technologies addressed by web standards work.
CERN: The European Organization for Nuclear Research, where Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web. The Web’s beginnings at CERN preceded the consortium’s creation.
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers: A nonprofit organization that coordinates domain names, IP address allocation, and related internet identifiers. ICANN coordinates internet identifiers rather than developing web specifications.
W3C Working Group: A W3C group chartered to develop specifications and other technical deliverables. Working groups do much of the specification drafting and review.
HTML: The markup language used to structure content on the Web. W3C has developed and maintained specifications for web markup.
