World Wide Web

The World Wide Web is a global hypertext information system in which URLs identify linked documents and other resources accessed over the internet.

Uniform Resource Locator: A Uniform Resource Locator is a string that identifies a resource and specifies how to access it. URLs give Web resources their identifying addresses.
Tim Berners-Lee: Tim Berners-Lee is a computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web while working at CERN. He proposed and built the Web's foundational system.
Hypertext: Hypertext is text organized with links that allow movement among connected documents or passages. The Web extends hypertext across networked resources.
World Wide Web Consortium: The World Wide Web Consortium is the organization that develops standards and guidelines for the Web. Its standards help keep Web technologies interoperable.
Gopher protocol: Gopher is an internet protocol that organizes and retrieves documents through hierarchical menus. Gopher offered networked information access before the Web's linked-document model prevailed.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol: Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the application-layer protocol used to exchange requests and responses on the Web. HTTP carries browser requests and server responses for Web resources.
CERN: CERN is the European particle physics laboratory headquartered near Geneva, Switzerland. The Web was developed there to help researchers share information.
TCP/IP: TCP/IP is the suite of communication protocols that routes data between devices across interconnected networks. The Web relies on internet protocols to carry its exchanges.
Open access: Open access is the practice of making scholarly works available online without subscription barriers. The Web enabled broad distribution of research beyond traditional publishing channels.
Internet Relay Chat: Internet Relay Chat is a protocol for real-time text communication in channels and private messages. IRC uses the internet for communication but is not a hypertext information system.
