World Zionist Organization

The World Zionist Organization is an international body founded at the First Zionist Congress in 1897 to advance the Zionist movement’s goals. It helped build institutions for Jewish settlement and national life in Palestine and later Israel.

First Zionist Congress: The 1897 gathering in Basel that established the organized political Zionist movement and founded the World Zionist Organization. Delegates created the organization at this congress and adopted its first political program.
Zionist Congress: The representative assembly of the World Zionist Organization, where delegates debate policy and elect leadership. The congress is the organization’s central forum for setting priorities and choosing its executive.
Jewish Agency: An organization established to represent Jewish interests in Palestine and later to support Jewish immigration to Israel. It developed from the Zionist movement’s representative institutions and became a central partner in state-building.

Theodor Herzl: An Austro-Hungarian journalist and political thinker who became a leading organizer of modern political Zionism. Herzl convened the First Zionist Congress and became the organization’s first president.
World Zionist Executive: The leadership body responsible for carrying out World Zionist Organization policy between congresses. It turns congress decisions into ongoing organizational work.
Aliyah: Jewish immigration to the Land of Israel, especially migration to the modern State of Israel. Zionist institutions promoted and organized immigration as part of their national project.
Labor Zionism: A Zionist current combining Jewish national self-determination with socialist organization and workers’ institutions. It became a powerful current within the organization, distinct from its liberal and revisionist rivals.
Israeli Settlements: Israeli civilian communities established in territories occupied by Israel since 1967, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The organization’s settlement-related roles draw scrutiny because the territories’ status is disputed internationally.
